Safety leadership & culture

Module 5: Overview

Module 5 builds upon your safety leadership capabilities to support OTML in operating a fatality-free mine and building a mature safety culture. Participants also assess and develop their holistic wellness to continue to visibly role model high-performance leadership.

In this module you will learn about:

  • Visible safety leadership – Understanding your role as a safety leader and your personal responsibility for leading a fatality-free operation.
  • Safety & Inclusion benchmarking – Reviewing your safety culture against an international site.
  • Holistic wellness and performance – Assess your holistic wellness and undertake a cohort challenge to improve your personal health and wellness as a senior leadership group.

Visible Safety Leadership

OTML’s vision to become the benchmark in safety performance requires leaders at all levels to visibly demonstrate their commitment to safety. This commitment to safety must remain consistent, regardless of business and production pressures.

SAFETY INDICATORS, CONTROLS, AND ELIMINATING FATALITIES

We spend much of our time looking in the rear-view mirror at data, lag indicators and investigating incidents that have already occurred.

Shaping Safety culture and behaviour

The health and safety culture of an organisation is a reflection of the values, attitudes, perceptions, competencies and behaviours of the people working there.

HOLISTIC HEALTH & PERFORMANCE

A critical focus for OTML in 2022 and beyond is managing a healthy workforce and community.

Module 5 Learning Objectives include:

SAFETY LEADERSHIP

Understand your responsibilities as a safety leader in delivering OTML’s 2025 vision.

SAFETY BELIEFS, ATTITUDES AND BEHAVIOURS

Increase your understanding of your own safety beliefs, attitudes and behaviours in leading and shaping safety culture.

UNWANTED EVENTS AND CRITICAL CONTROLS

Review OTML’s major unwanted events and critical controls in your role and commitment to eliminate fatalities.

HOLISTIC WELLNESS

Increase your personal commitment to improving holistic wellness and reducing psychosocial hazards at OTML.

Remember, this module is not designed to make you a risk management expert. Rather it is designed to support your role as a safety leader in shaping culture to improve safety performance and eliminating fatalities. Importantly, it is designed to help you take personal responsibility in understanding OTML’s key risks (major unwanted events), understand and review the controls and ensure you have communicated, monitored and held people accountable for managing key risks to protect the lives of those around us.
